Lipar

Lipar is a poignant and visually rich coming-of-age drama set in the remote yet vibrant region of Sistan and Baluchestan in Iran. Directed by Hossein Rigi, the story centers on Barakat, a Baloch teenager whose dream of acting and fascination with Bollywood become his compass in a life marked by longing and cultural nuance. Driven by the desire to find his long-lost mother, Barakat embarks on a journey of self-discovery that widens to embrace his community’s hopes and identity.

The film offers a fresh and respectful portrait of a region often underrepresented in Iranian cinema — one that highlights local hospitality, social dynamics, and a love for cinema itself. With a cast including prominent actors alongside local talent, Lipar weaves social melodrama with tender moments and romantic threads, all while remaining grounded in the specificity of place.

It stands out not only for its heartfelt narrative but also for being one of the first major films to approach this southwestern province from a native filmmaker’s viewpoint. Rather than relying on external stereotypes, it offers an inside look at the geography, culture, and youthful ambition of Sistan and Baluchestan, capturing both its challenges and its beauty.
