Maste Eshgh

Maste Eshgh is a sweeping historical romance directed by Hassan Fathi that brings to life the transformative relationship between the 13th-century Persian mystic poet Jalal ad-Din Rumi and the wandering dervish Shams of Tabriz. Set in the cities of Konya and Tabriz during a period of political tension and spiritual unrest, the film portrays Rumi as a respected scholar whose life is irrevocably changed by his encounter with the enigmatic Shams.

Their meeting sparks a profound spiritual awakening in Rumi, shifting him from a conventional religious teacher to a passionate poet devoted to divine love. As their bond deepens, it challenges social norms and provokes jealousy among Rumi’s followers and family, who struggle to understand the intensity of their connection. The film thoughtfully explores themes of devotion, ego, sacrifice, and the search for transcendence.

Lavishly produced, Drunk on Love combines poetic dialogue, evocative cinematography, and powerful performances to depict a friendship that reshaped Persian literature and Sufi thought. More than a historical drama, the film serves as a meditation on love as a transformative force capable of dissolving identity, tradition, and worldly attachment in pursuit of spiritual truth.
