Soodabeh

Sudabeh is a 2025 Iranian psychological crime-drama directed and written by Mohammad Ali Sajjadi. Blending gothic horror with family drama, the film unfolds within an atmospheric, decaying ancestral home—complete with a mysterious black cat—creating a classic yet intensely eerie mood. Sajjadi deliberately subverts genre expectations, opting for realistic tension over jump-scares. The narrative plays on mental ambiguity and creeping dread, building through unexpected plot twists rooted in the dynamics of marriage, family, and inherited trauma.

The cast is anchored by compelling performances from Roja Teymourian and Reza Babak, supported by strong work from younger actors—creating a balanced ensemble that enriches the film’s mysterious milieu. Technical elements stand out: Karen Homayounfar’s haunting score enhances the film’s sinister atmosphere, while cinematographer Rouzbeh Raiga’s visuals transform the house itself into a character. Overall, Soodabeh offers a chilling and cerebral cinematic experience—a polished, thoughtful entry in Iran’s seldom-explored psychological horror genre. While some critics note narrative pacing issues, the film’s evocative imagery and emotional depth make it a memorable addition to contemporary Iranian cinema.
